Salterns Lane

Street guide, Lee-on-the-Solent

Salterns Lane runs along the western edge of Lee-on-the-Solent towards Hill Head, and its name records the historical salt workings that once operated along this stretch of coast. Salt production was an important industry on the shores of the Solent for centuries, exploiting the shallow tidal flats to evaporate sea water and extract salt for preservation and trade. The lane follows a route that skirts the transition between Lee-on-the-Solent and Hill Head, passing through an area where the built environment gives way to more open ground near the coast. Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve lies at the western end of this corridor, one of the most important birdwatching sites on the Hampshire coast. The reserve occupies the former estuary of the River Meon and supports significant populations of wading birds, wildfowl, and migrants, with hides and viewing points accessible from the reserve entrance. For visitors interested in natural history, walking Salterns Lane and continuing towards Titchfield Haven provides an excellent half-day excursion that combines coastal scenery with serious wildlife watching. The lane also connects to the coastal path system, allowing walkers to continue along the shoreline in either direction. Properties along Salterns Lane are set in larger plots than those in central Lee, and the area has a semi-rural feel. The combination of heritage, wildlife, and coastal landscape makes this one of the more rewarding walks accessible from Lee-on-the-Solent.
