Marine Parade East
Street guide, Lee-on-the-Solent
Marine Parade East forms the eastern section of Lee-on-the-Solent's celebrated seafront promenade and represents some of the town's finest Victorian architecture. Established between 1884 and 1894 as part of the original development plan to transform this corner of Hampshire into a fashionable seaside resort, Marine Parade was lined with impressive late Victorian red brick buildings that continue to define the character of the seafront today. Many of these original buildings survive, though some have been replaced by more contemporary structures that nonetheless respect the overall character of the promenade. This section of Marine Parade hosts a concentration of waterfront restaurants, cafes, and leisure venues that take advantage of the panoramic views across the Solent towards the Isle of Wight. The iconic Lee-on-Solent War Memorial commands a prominent position along this stretch, serving as a focal point for remembrance and reflection overlooking the water. The promenade itself has been extensively upgraded in recent years and now offers a flat, accessible route perfect for walking, cycling, or pushing a buggy, with benches positioned throughout to encourage visitors to pause and enjoy the seaward views. A modern splash park and children's play area serve family visitors, whilst a skate park caters to younger generations. Facilities along this eastern section include independent shops and seafood restaurants with alfresco seating, ice cream parlours, and cafes positioned to maximise the sea views. The eastern section connects seamlessly to Marine Parade West and Pier Street, forming the heart of the town's leisure and tourism infrastructure. On clear days, the views across the Solent are truly exceptional, and many residents choose to walk Marine Parade East regularly for the combination of fresh sea air, exercise, and the sense of connection to the maritime heritage that defines this part of Hampshire's coastline. Summer weekends see the promenade bustling with activity; quieter months offer a more contemplative experience.
