Marine Parade West
Street guide, Lee-on-the-Solent
Marine Parade West continues the seafront promenade beyond the former pier site, heading towards Hill Head and the western limits of the town. This section has a noticeably quieter character than its eastern counterpart, with fewer commercial premises and a more residential feel. Lee-on-the-Solent Sailing Club operates from this stretch, and on weekends throughout the sailing season, dinghies and catamarans launch from the shingle beach directly below the promenade. The club has been based here since 1935 and remains one of the most active on the Solent. Walking westward, the promenade eventually gives way to the coastal path towards Hill Head, passing the site where hovercraft trials took place in the 1960s. The beach along this section is predominantly shingle with patches of sand exposed at low tide, and it tends to be less crowded than the beaches nearer the town centre. Several of the large Victorian and Edwardian houses facing the sea survive from the original 1880s development, when the town was laid out as a planned seaside resort. The Solent views are outstanding along the entire length, and sunsets seen from this western aspect are particularly striking. Visitors seeking a peaceful seafront walk away from the busier central section will find Marine Parade West reliably calm.
