Newgate Lane

Street guide, Lee-on-the-Solent

Newgate Lane is the main northern approach to Lee-on-the-Solent, carrying traffic from the Fareham area and the M27 motorway southwards into the town. Junction 11 of the M27 connects via the A27 and then Newgate Lane to bring visitors into Lee, making this the primary route for anyone arriving from outside the immediate area. The road was significantly improved in recent years with the construction of Newgate Lane East, a bypass designed to ease congestion at the previous single-carriageway bottleneck. The original Newgate Lane passes through open farmland and the edge of the Peel Common area, where the character transitions from rural Hampshire into the suburban streets of Lee-on-the-Solent. For visitors navigating by road, Newgate Lane is the first indication of arrival. The Peel Common roundabout marks the junction where traffic splits between Lee-on-the-Solent (continuing south) and Stubbington (heading west). Gosport Borough Council and Hampshire County Council have invested in this route to manage the traffic generated by the Daedalus development and the steady growth in housing across the area. The road passes close to Peel Common wastewater treatment works, which is screened from view but can occasionally make its presence known on warm days. Beyond this, the approach into Lee is straightforward, leading directly onto Manor Way and the town centre. Cyclists should note that Newgate Lane carries fast traffic and is better avoided in favour of quieter parallel routes.
