Lee-on-the-Solent is a genuinely good destination for a family day out. The combination of a safe beach, free outdoor activities, the Hovercraft Museum, and a seafront that keeps children entertained without emptying your wallet makes it one of the better family options on the Hampshire coast.
The splash park on the seafront is the headline attraction for younger children. Located on Marine Parade near the sailing club, it features water jets, spray fountains, and paddling areas that keep children busy for hours. It is free to use and operates during the summer months, typically from late May through to September. On a warm day, the splash park is the busiest spot in Lee, with families camped around the edges while children run back and forth through the water. Bring towels, spare clothes, and sun cream.
The beach itself is shingle, sloping gently into the Solent. The water is calm compared to open-coast beaches, with modest wave action that makes paddling and shallow swimming suitable for children. Rock pooling at low tide along certain stretches reveals crabs, shrimps, and anemones. Building shingle structures, skimming stones, and digging are all part of the standard programme.
The playground on the seafront provides climbing frames, swings, and slides for a range of ages. A skate park nearby caters to older children and teenagers with boards and scooters.
The Hovercraft Museum at Daedalus is a genuinely unique attraction. It houses the world's largest collection of hovercraft, including the enormous SR.N4 that once carried passengers across the English Channel. Children can climb into cockpits, press buttons, and learn about the British innovation that made hovercraft possible. The museum is open on selected days, typically Saturdays during the season, and is well worth planning a visit around.
For rainy days, the options within Lee itself are limited, but the wider area provides good alternatives. The Explosion Museum in Gosport covers naval firepower history with interactive displays. The Submarine Museum in Gosport lets families walk through a real submarine. Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, accessible via the Gosport Ferry, has the Mary Rose, HMS Victory, and HMS Warrior. All of these are within thirty minutes of Lee-on-the-Solent.
The promenade walk is manageable with pushchairs and toddlers, being flat and paved throughout. Cafes along the route provide refuelling stops, and the ice cream kiosks ensure that the inevitable demands for a treat can be met without detour.
The cost of a family day out in Lee-on-the-Solent can be remarkably low. The beach, splash park, playground, and promenade are all free. A bag of chips shared on a bench costs a few pounds.
