Getting to Lee-on-the-Solent

How to reach Lee by car from the M27, by bus from Fareham and by ferry from Portsmouth

Lee-on-the-Solent sits at the southern end of the Gosport peninsula, facing the Isle of Wight across the Solent. It is not on the way to anywhere else, which is part of its charm, but it does mean you need to plan your route. The good news is that getting there is simple once you know the options.

By car, Lee-on-the-Solent is reached from the M27 motorway. From the east (Portsmouth direction), take Junction 11 and follow the A32 south toward Gosport. After passing through Fareham, pick up signs for Stubbington and Lee-on-the-Solent via the B3334. The drive from the motorway junction takes around fifteen to twenty minutes in normal traffic. From the west (Southampton direction), Junction 9 onto the A27 through Fareham also works, connecting to the same route south through Stubbington.

Rush hour traffic along the A32 and through Stubbington can add ten to fifteen minutes during weekday mornings and evenings. The Gosport peninsula has limited road access, so the routes bottleneck during commuting hours. Weekends and school holidays are generally clear outside of the busiest summer Saturdays.

By public transport, the nearest railway station is Fareham, approximately five miles north. Fareham has regular services on the South Western Railway and Southern networks, with trains to Portsmouth (ten minutes), Southampton (twenty minutes), London Waterloo (around ninety minutes), and Brighton (one hour forty). From Fareham station, First Bus services run to Lee-on-the-Solent every fifteen to thirty minutes, with a journey time of about twenty-five minutes. The bus stops on Lee High Street are a short walk from the seafront.

The Gosport Ferry provides an alternative route for anyone coming from Portsmouth. The passenger ferry crosses Portsmouth Harbour in four minutes, connecting Portsmouth Hard (adjacent to Portsmouth Harbour station) to Gosport. From Gosport bus station, buses serve Lee-on-the-Solent directly. This route is particularly useful for visitors arriving by train at Portsmouth Harbour or Portsmouth and Southsea stations.

Cycling to Lee-on-the-Solent is practical from Fareham and Stubbington. The terrain is flat throughout, and sections of dedicated cycle path exist along the route. The ride from Fareham station is around five miles on largely quiet roads.

Solent Airport at Daedalus, on the western edge of Lee-on-the-Solent, handles light aircraft and general aviation but is not a scheduled airline airport.

For satnavs, use PO13 9BH for the seafront car park area, or PO13 9AL for the High Street. Both will bring you to the centre of town without difficulty.
