Fort Gilkicker

Heritage, Lee-on-the-Solent

A Grade II listed Palmerston fort on the coast at Stokes Bay, built between 1863 and 1871 as part of the chain of fortifications defending Portsmouth Harbour from seaborne attack. The semi-circular casemated fort was designed to mount heavy guns covering the approaches to the harbour entrance. It saw active military use through both World Wars before being decommissioned. The fort is now in private ownership with long-running redevelopment plans. Access to the interior is restricted, but the exterior and surrounding coastal land are publicly accessible. The walk along Stokes Bay past the fort provides excellent views across to the Isle of Wight and toward Portsmouth. A striking piece of Victorian military engineering.
