Browndown Battery
Heritage, Lee-on-the-Solent
A scheduled monument on the coast between Lee-on-the-Solent and Stokes Bay, originally constructed in the 1840s and later expanded as part of the Palmerston fortification programme defending Portsmouth. The battery served as an artillery range for much of the 20th century, and the surrounding Browndown area was MOD land until relatively recently. The coastal walk past Browndown runs along a shingle beach backed by rare vegetated shingle habitat, which supports uncommon plant species. The battery itself is fenced but visible from the coastal path. The stretch of coastline here is quieter than the main Lee seafront, and the combination of military heritage and natural interest makes it a worthwhile detour for walkers.
