The two-mile beach at Lee-on-the-Solent provides accessible shore fishing along the Solent coast, with a reasonable variety of species available through the year. The shingle beach, the structure provided by the groynes, and the productive Solent waters combine to make this a worthwhile mark for both local anglers and visitors.

The beach shelves into deeper water relatively quickly for a shingle shore, putting anglers within casting range of species that prefer a few metres of depth. The groynes along the beach create structure and current variation that attracts fish, and many experienced anglers position themselves near these wooden barriers, casting along the edges where fish patrol.

Bass are the target species that most anglers come for. They appear from late April and remain available through to October, with the peak fishing in June, July, and August. Bass feed on crabs, worms, and small fish along the shingle margins, particularly at dawn and dusk. Peeler crab is the outstanding bait when available, though ragworm and lugworm also produce fish. Current bass regulations include bag limits and minimum size restrictions that change periodically, so checking the latest rules before fishing is essential.

Smooth hounds arrive in May and provide excellent sport through the summer months. These small sharks, typically between four and ten pounds, fight hard on light tackle and are targeted specifically by many Lee anglers. Peeler crab is the standard bait, fished on a running ledger rig on the bottom.

Winter fishing brings whiting, which arrive in October and stay through to February. They feed enthusiastically on ragworm and fish strip, and multiple fish sessions are common on good evenings. Codling appear in smaller numbers during cold spells, and a cod from the Lee beach is a prize worth celebrating. Dabs and flounder provide steady sport through the colder months.

Year-round species include dogfish, pouting, and the occasional sole. Sole fishing is best at night during the summer months, with small hooks and ragworm tipped with squid strip being the standard approach.

The best fishing spots along the Lee beach are known to regular anglers, and the information is shared with reasonable generosity. The stretch between the sailing club and the beginning of the Browndown section is considered productive, as is the beach directly below the main car park on Marine Parade. Night fishing is popular and perfectly feasible, with head torches and rod tip lights marking anglers along the beach.

Tackle shops in Gosport stock fresh and frozen bait, terminal tackle, and local knowledge. Ragworm and lugworm are available throughout the year, while peeler crab is seasonal and sometimes requires ordering in advance.

For boat fishing, charter boats operate from Gosport and Portsmouth, offering trips into the Solent and further afield. Wreck fishing, reef fishing, and seasonal tope and shark trips extend the range well beyond what the shore can offer.
