Sailing Races and Regattas near Lee-on-the-Solent

The local racing calendar and Solent sailing events

The Solent is the most active sailing water in Britain, and Lee-on-the-Solent sits in the middle of it. The racing calendar runs from spring through to autumn, with events ranging from club-level dinghy races on Saturday afternoons to international yacht regattas that fill the horizon with sails.

Lee-on-the-Solent Sailing Club runs its own racing programme throughout the season. Weekend series form the core, with handicap races that allow different dinghy classes to compete on an equal basis. Points accumulate over the season, and the end-of-year prize giving recognises consistency as much as outright speed. Midweek evening races during the summer months provide shorter, sharper racing for those who cannot make every weekend. Open meetings, where visiting sailors join the racing, bring fresh competition and different boats to the start line.

The Round the Island Race is the biggest single sailing event visible from Lee-on-the-Solent. Held annually in late June or early July, it sends around 1,400 yachts anticlockwise around the Isle of Wight, starting and finishing at Cowes. The fleet passes directly in front of Lee-on-the-Solent on the outbound leg, heading west along the Solent, and the spectacle of hundreds of sails stretching from horizon to horizon is one of the great sights of the British sailing year. The promenade is lined with spectators, binoculars, and flasks of tea.

Cowes Week, held in late July and early August, is the largest annual sailing regatta in the world. While the racing takes place in the waters around Cowes on the Isle of Wight, much of the fleet is visible from Lee-on-the-Solent, particularly during races on the eastern Solent courses. The event attracts over 700 boats and runs for eight days, with racing in classes from small keelboats to ocean racers.

The Solent also hosts a continuous programme of class-specific events, open regattas, and passage races throughout the season. The RORC (Royal Ocean Racing Club) runs offshore races that start or finish in the Solent, and the fleet movements are visible from the Lee promenade. Dinghy open meetings at clubs along the Solent coast provide racing opportunities for Lee sailors who want to test themselves away from home waters.

For spectators rather than participants, Lee-on-the-Solent is one of the best free viewing points on the Solent. The promenade faces directly across the main racing waters, and on any summer weekend the view is likely to include racing boats of some description. A good pair of binoculars and a basic understanding of sail trim and racing tactics transforms the experience from watching boats move around to following the competition.

The sailing club keeps its calendar on its website, and the Solent-wide racing programme is published by the combined clubs. For visitors timing a trip to coincide with a major event, Round the Island Race day and the opening of Cowes Week are the two fixtures most worth planning around. Both provide memorable spectacles that require nothing more than a bench on the promenade and a clear day.
